Friesian Community Mourns Anita Mellot

On Sunday, Sept 7,2008, Anita Mellott died in Roseville, CA. as the result of an accident on a motorcycle. Her husband John was also critically injured, and remains hospitalized.

John and Anita were instrumental in reintroducing the Friesian horse to the United States with their first group of three horses in 1982. With their stallions, Sander and Lukas, they have helped shape the future of the Friesian horse here. They were avid competitors and exhibitors, and consumate advocates for the Friesian, always willing to man the breed booth at an Expo or Equine Affaire.

Anita, whose heritage is from the Netherlands, was the President of the North American Stallion Owners, and John is a past President of FHANA. Both have been active in all aspects of promoting the Friesian horse in America. Their ranch, Black Horse Valley Ranch in Mountain Center CA was recently the site of a gathering for the return of Lukas from the Netherlands. We ask that you continue to keep a good thought for John's recovery.

Anita, with her outgoing, welcoming personality and her undeniable love of the Friesian horse will be sorely missed by people who love Friesians. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Champion Show Horse Ravel Lost at Foundation Celebration Show

This evening at the South Point Equestrian Center, a great show horse was lost. Ravel, a Pure Spanish Horse, owned and cherished by Henry “Hank” Gutierrez of Southern California took his last bow and collapsed in the arena, the place he loved best.

The arena was then cleared due to the emotional distress of the owner and the show staff. They are a close family and all truly loved the dance of Ravel. The event tonight was a benefit to support the Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse Rescue Program.

Ravel was examined by show veterinarian Dr. Alberto Rojas Garcia and also the Equestrian Center’s house veterinarian Dr. Leslie Schure of Desert Pines Equine Center. After examining Ravel, it was determined that he died of a cardiac incident, similar to a heart attack with humans. Dr. Schure said, “He appeared to be in perfect health. There were no outward signs that there was anything wrong. He died like we all wish we could; quickly and pain free.”

All horses being housed inside the South Point Equestrian center are required to have a health certification from a certified veterinarian within 30 days of their entrance as well as a negative Coggins Test. Ravel was most recently examined on August 25, 2008 by his veterinarian.

Steve Stallworth, GM of the South Point Equestrian Center said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of our Equestrian family. This being a first for the South Point, we are doing everything we can to ease the community through this time.”

Richard Nickerson, President of the Foundation said, “We all mourn the loss of this magnificent horse, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his owners, Maureen and Henry Gutierrez.”

The Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse plans to remember the life and performances of Ravel by hosting a service in his honor during the show on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 1:00P.M. They welcome everyone in the community to join them for the celebration of Ravel’s life.

Ravel was best known for being a two-time Reserve National Champion, as a four year old, the National Driving Champion, as well as numerous additional awards. Ravel also sired several champions as well.

The Foundation of the Pure Spanish Horse is an organization that was established in 1998 to develop, perpetuate and foster an appreciation and understanding of the Pure Spanish Horse throughout the United States and any other country where interest in the Pure Spanish Horse has been expressed or the help of the foundation requested.

Don’t miss the inaugural one-week course in Working Equitation with natural horsemanship clinician Glenn Stewart in Brazil

Specifically Brazilian-bred Lusitano horses, are the driving force uniting three dynamic people who have developed an innovative project. Geraldo Lefosse, Jean Llewellyn and Glenn Stewart are combining many years of equestrian industry skills and experience to establish instructional schools of Working Equitation in Brazil and Canada that will be launched in November 2008 in São Paulo.

Little known in North America, Working Equitation (WE) was developed to test the relationship between a horse and rider and their capacity to negotiate any obstacles they might encounter performing a variety of working duties in fields and open countryside. Naturally, for safety’s sake, obedience, steadiness, agility and speed are typical necessities. Working Equitation as a competitive sport has seen exponential growth in popularity and participation in recent years, and hosted its first European and World Championships in 1996 and 2002 respectively. Today this emerging discipline has become part of the competitive equestrian landscape in Portugal, France, Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Sweden, as well as Mexico and Brazil.

Like eventing, Working Equitation is a three-phase competition including dressage plus two separate obstacle courses (the final phase against the clock), at which Lusitano horses have already demonstrated their ability to excel. Synonymous with world-class dressage by virtue of their naturally gifted gaits, Lusitanos have categorically proven their aptitude in the multi-disciplinary environment of Working Equitation, especially thanks to their work willingness and extremely docile temperament.

The project being launched by Lefosse, Llewellyn and Stewart is the first of its kind, providing a sound educational base for anyone wishing to learn or improve their Working Equitation skills.

WHERE: Located close to the famous spa town of Aguas de Lindóia, 90 minutes drive from São Paulo, Lefosse’s Haras das Mangueiras, a world-class Lusitano breeding facility since 1992, currently hosts a leg in the Brazilian Working Equitation Championship series, and provides a fitting instructional environment plus superbly trained and experienced WE Lusitano horses for visitors to ride.

HOW: A former Parelli instructor, Glenn Stewart – based in Fort St. John, BC, is a renowned and highly popular natural horsemanship clinician with a lifetime of skills that were recognized by Lefosse when they met during a stud farm tour organized by Jean Llewellyn last November on behalf of ABPSL (the pure-bred Lusitano breeding association in Brazil). Stewart will be honing his WE skills with the expert guidance of Benedito Torres de Macedo, an extensively awarded competitor and member of the Brazilian national team who finished as reserve champions at the 2002 WE World Championship. “Dito” is a highly respected rider and instructor in both Brazil and Portugal

WHEN: The resulting WE project has evolved from nearly nine months of tripartite discussion and will be inaugurated in November 2008 with a certificated course in Working Equitation using natural horsemanship training methods. In addition, a WE judges’ course will be offered, also certificated, that is open to all interested parties. A flexible schedule allows participation in both the WE riding instruction and the judges’ course, and will run from November 15 to 22, 2008.

The week will conclude with a special Gala Evening where rookie judges will have the opportunity to test their skills during a “live” Working Equitation competition, and also be invited to participate in a special WE competition to demonstrate their new-found skills.

During the same period, world-renowned equestrian photographer Peter Llewellyn will be hosting special workshops for horse photography, as well as guided field trips to photograph nature and wildlife. Anyone wishing to extend their stay in Brazil may choose to arrive one week earlier for a wilderness safari beginning on November 9 to the legendary Pantanal region – the world’s largest wetland habitat that can boast the greatest diversity of wildlife on earth. Or, an additional five-day photography field trip begins in São Paulo on Tuesday, November 4 – for a total of 18 nights. Each period is fully inclusive of full-board, lodging plus all riding and photography activities.

If you would like further information about riding or judging Working Equitation, forthcoming trips/clinics, or if you are interested in hosting a WE clinic, demonstration, or event in 2009, please contact Jean Llewellyn for further information: jean@jeanllewellyn.com

Tragedy strikes the Brazilian dressage team at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in Sha Tin/Hong Kong

Hong Kong: Today, the hopes and dreams of Brazilian dressage fans were destroyed when Nilo VO sadly failed his veterinary re-inspection. Yesterday, after being sent to the holding box with Rogério Clementino, the veterinarians decided he should be re-presented 24 hours later. On this occasion, Brazilian team coach Johan Zagers shouldered the responsibility for presenting Nilo to the veterinary committee, and after trotting him twice, and following an extremely lengthy discussion, it was finally announced that Nilo had failed.

Without a reserve rider, Brazil will no longer be able to participate in the Olympic team competition, although Luiza Tavares de Almeida and Leandro Aparecido da Silva will be able to participate as individuals.

A disappointed Victor Oliva said: "We are deeply sad. We have done very serious work for the last three years and that's why I want to take everybody that took part, especially our coach Johan Zagers and veterinarian Neimar Roncati. Now we'll support Luiza Tavares de Almeida and Leandro Aparecido da Silva who will certainly do a good job with their Lusitano horses. Tomorrow we will be less upset and we'll start our Olympic programme for London 2012."

Although the official veterinarians are not obliged to offer any explanation, they did say that their decision was based on frontal unevenness in Nilo’s paces indicating a lameness issue. Naturally, this could be as minor as an ill-fitting shoe. Brazilian Chef d'Equipe Salim Nigri and the Brazilian team veterinary Thomas Wolff said they did not agree with the decision of the veterinary committee. According to Nigri, "At this second vet check, he really looked better and in our opinion he was in a condition to compete."

Wolff added: "The withdrawal of Nilo was a surprise not only for us Brazilians but also for other delegations. Nobody expected Nilo to be rejected. Unfortunately, it's a final decision."

Despite the bitter disappointment for Rogério Clementino and Nilo’s breeder and owner, Victor Oliva, it should be remembered that even qualifying for an Olympic Games is an enormous accomplishment to which most people can only aspire!

Spanish Team also out of Olympic Team Competition

Devastating news came for Spanish Olympic team rider Beatriz Ferrer-Salat, bronze medal winner at the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, when she was forced to withdraw her horse Fabergé from the competition after he went lame earlier this week.

Juan Matute and Wie Atlantico (Spanish team alternates) were not allowed to make the trip to Hong Kong. With no travelling reserve, this takes the Spanish out of the 2008 dressage team competition.

Faberge has been retired from competition due to the injury. Despite a big improvement, he won't be fit to take part in the Grand Prix. This is the second time Beatriz Ferrer-Salat has been sidelined at the last minute. She missed out on the 2006 World Equestrian Games because her 2004 Olympic mount Beauvalais was injured.
